I would have handed him 23 Minutes in Hell by Bill Wiese and told him that if he does not ask Christ for forgiveness and accept Him as Savior, that he should indeed fear what is to come. And if he really wanted to be afraid to make sure he read the book I just gave him along with the scripture passages mentioned therein.
I would have told him how to find Jesus, and that he was loved very much............this man needed to know he was loved, and that it was out of love that there was atonement...
I am not sure the love thing would have gotten through to him at that time. Plus, he was a doctor and many doctors need "Just the facts madam.". Some people have to be scared into loving Christ, then in the acceptance of Him find the comforting love. A very logical response vs. the warm fuzzy "top of the mountain" finding Jesus' love and forgiveness response. Effective pastorring allows for both and must include both.
