TULIP, Part I
Now that we've examined predestination, let's move on to what is commonly called "Calvinism."
The old truth that Calvin preached, that Augustine preached, that Paul preached, is the truth that I must preach to-day, or else be false to my conscience and my God. I cannot shape the truth; I know of no such thing as paring off the rough edges of a doctrine. John Knox's gospel is my gospel. That which thundered through Scotland must thunder through England again.

That quote might be a shock to some of you, especially if you discovered Spurgeon through reading the fundamentalist newspaper "The Sword of the Lord," a militantly anti-Calvinist publication. I was surprised to find out that John R. Rice published those sermons by first editing them. In the September 22, 1950 issue, he wrote, "If there are paragraphs which are not acceptable doctrinally, I indicate that they are to be left out." Rice even edited Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." (You can read the unedited version of that famous sermon here, and I highly recommend it.)

Is Calvinism "doctrinnally unacceptable"? Or is it the gospel, as Spurgeon said?

Let's examine this Calvinism or Reformed theology. This doctrine was set down at the Synod of Dort from 1618 to 1619 in answer to the system of Arminianism. I would like to point out that you should not imagine that at the Synod of Dort, John Calvin stood in one corner and Jacobus Arminius stood in the other corner debating each other. Arminius was not quite four years old when John Calvin died. Also, the Synod met a full nine years after Arminius died. So what was this all about?

The argument was nothing new. It was the same debate between Augustine (man can do nothing right) and Pelagius (man can do everything right) in the 5th century. Martin Luther even based some of his arguments against indulgences and salvation through works on the Augustinian doctrines of predestination, irresistible grace, limited atonement, and perseverance of the saints. A couple centuries after the Synod, George Whitefield and John Wesley debated the same things. Well, back to the Synod.

The Dutch Reformed Church called the Synod to deal with the controversy of Arminianism. Followers of Arminius had raised objections, known as the Remonstrance of 1610 to the Belgic Confession and the teachings of John Calvin, Theodore Beza, and their followers. They formulated their objection into five points:
  1. Election based on foreseen faith
  2. Universal atonement
  3. Partial human depravity
  4. Resistible grace
  5. The possibility of lapse from grace
The Synod reviewed these points and examined them from the Scriptures, and rejected them. Their exposition on these five disputed points is known as the Canons of Dort. They formulated their decision into these five points:
  1. Total Depravity
  2. Unconditional Election
  3. Limited Atonement
  4. Irresistible Grace
  5. The Perseverance of the Saints
These five points work very nicely into the memorable acronym TULIP, which is also the national flower of the Netherlands. How 'bout that.

Now that you know perhaps a little bit more of the history, let's look at the five points individually, starting with Total Depravity:
Man, by his fall into a state of sin, has wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation: so as, a natural man, being altogether averse from that good, and dead in sin, is not able, by his own strength, to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto.
Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 9

What's the Bible say?

For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us, you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on your behalf for the gift granted to us through many.
2 Corinthians 1:8-11

Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:16-19

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
